Continuing with what I had started to do for Elijah B Torn’s Biological Deadline session I did the recording on my own with a laptop, Ableton Live 8 and most excitedly with my Fractal Audio Systems Axe-Fx II and Atomic power amp and passive cabs rig. The II’s ability to work as an audio interface allows me to do this type of work anywhere – literally. On this day my part was recorded in my living room in one afternoon while my kids were at school and my dog was passed out on the couch. Life was good that day.
Parallax
With Steve and Adam Deitch killin’ it on this track I knew I had to bring it home with a part that would do this tune’s vibe justice. Steve asked for a dotted 1/8 note delay line that would repeat. In the section I play on the changes as well as the rhythmic organization are completely intriguing and inspirational. This hypnotic part composed itself as I merely followed the very cool harmonic content with carefully voice led arpeggios while throwing in some linear break up here and there. Working an Axe-Fx II preset to it’s limits I came up with a phat-ass tone with just the right amount of filtering as it drove home the infamous delay syncopations this delay trick is known for.
