Rodney Holmes was one of the first of many guys I met in NYC through Dave “Fuze” Fiuczynski. The first night I took a lesson with Fuze we ended up hanging out afterwards. On my way back to the Path Train we hit The 55 Bar. There Mitch Stein was playing and his rhythm section included Rodney.
Years later Rodney and I would work together as sidemen on a few things including Haale’s band after Keith Carlock left. It was during that time Rodney was recording his first (and only?) solo record. I was thrilled to be asked to play on it. My parts were recorded at Rodney’s apartment when he lived in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn. We used this odd looking red thing called a POD Mitch let us borrow into a program called Logic by a German company called Emagic – pioneering times!
I hooked up with Rodney again in a band project he was leading called Lithium Tree. The vibe was fun as the music was invigorating. Loads of potential. Sadly, we never recorded a proper release before my time came to an end.
Phobos
On this track I’m laying down filter sweeps with a Frostwave Resonator at 0:00, 1:12-1:36, 2:00-2:34.
Sabertooth
Here I play the slickly-syncopated head at 1:07 and 5:21 through a borrowed POD 2.0 courtesy of Mitch Stein. Fun fact: Rodney used this track on the 2005 Modern Drummer Festival Weekend that turned into a killer DVD. I so wanted to be on that stage alongside my NYC brethren who I was regularly playing with at the time. Thanks to Rodney I was there in spirit.
